Dr. Anneke Smit

Biography

Associate Professor Anneke Smit is the inaugural Director of the Centre for Cities (C4C) at Windsor Law. She previously held lectureships at the School of Law, University of Reading, UK. Smit's academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Reading, an LLB from McGill University, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on spatial justice and the intersection of people with place, particularly in the context of municipal law, land use planning, and property law. She has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions such as Oxford University, Université d'Aix-Marseille, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Smit has co-edited publications that are integral to law and planning courses across Canadian universities and is involved in various funded projects aimed at equitable sustainable city-building. Her leadership at C4C encompasses a diverse team of faculty and student research associates, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to global problems at the local level. In her teaching roles, she offers courses such as Property Law and Cities Climate Action Policy Clinic. Smit is actively engaged with external organizations on refugee law policy and regularly provides commentary in English and French media. Her accolades include several awards recognizing excellence in mentoring and contributions to post-secondary education.
