Dr. Annemieke Klijn

Biography

Annemieke Klijn studied history at the University of Groningen and Ghent University. She received a research grant from the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research to write a comparative study about Belgian and Dutch social democracy from 1933 to 1946. She has authored a biography of the Catholic socialist Limburg figure Sjeng Tans, one of the main founders of Maastricht University, and has written monographs on the history of the mentally handicapped in Limburg, the history of psychiatry, especially in the twentieth century, and the history of academic medicine at the University Medical Center Utrecht and Maastricht University. As a lecturer and assistant professor, she teaches modern history and is involved in research projects related to social democracy, psychiatry, the care of the mentally handicapped, and medical history. Klijn has significant experience in supervising research projects and has worked as a curator for the Arts Heritage Committee.
