Biography

Annemieke Klijn studied history at the University of Groningen and Ghent University, where she received a research grant from the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research to conduct a comparative study on Belgian and Dutch social democracy from 1933 to 1946. She authored a biography on the catholic socialist Sjeng Tans, one of the founding figures of Maastricht University, and has published monographs covering the history of mentally handicapped individuals in Limburg, the evolution of psychiatry, and the history of academic medicine at the University Medical Center Utrecht. Currently, Klijn teaches modern history, focusing on writing and research in the field. She graduated from the gymnasium in Groningen in 1974, completed her PhD at the University of Groningen in 1990, and has been working at Maastricht University as an assistant professor since 1990. She also serves as a curator for the Art Heritage Committee. Her post-doctoral work has included projects in social democracy history, psychiatry, and the medical history of academic contexts.
