Annette Baattrup-Pedersen is a freshwater ecologist with more than 25 years of research experience working at the intersection of research and advisory activities in the management of freshwater ecosystems. She is employed as a part-time researcher at Aarhus University and as a part-time consultant for NIRAS, a large international consulting group. Her research is focused on understanding and disentangling the main stressors affecting freshwater-related ecosystems, particularly streams, in terms of restoration and rehabilitation. She is engaged in the implementation of key directives such as the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Habitats Directive (HD), as well as the Biodiversity Strategy. Additionally, she heads the development of Denmark's legally adopted assessment system, DVPI, which aims to evaluate the ecological status of streams based on plant species assemblages required by the WFD. In recent years, her focus has expanded to include the potential use of nature-based solutions as a supplement and/or alternative to traditional solutions to address a range of societal challenges, particularly climate change, water management, and water purification.
