Biography

Annette Hamilton is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales, specializing in Film Studies and Media Anthropology. Trained as a cultural anthropologist, she worked in remote indigenous Australian communities from 1968 to 1985, participating as an expert witness in several significant Northern Territory Land Rights cases. Hamilton has published numerous scholarly articles based on her extensive research into indigenous Australian societies and authored the book "Nature Nurture: Child-Rearing North Central Arnhem Land" in 1981. In 1985, she shifted her research focus to anthropology of media in Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, and is recognized for her work on cinema in Thailand, which has been translated into Japanese, French, and Spanish. She co-edited the influential work "Filmmaker Prostitute: Dennis O'Rourke's 'The Good Woman Bangkok'" in 1997. Hamilton's recent research includes film studies in post-socialist contexts such as Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, with a major project on the politics of cinema during the Khmer Rouge era. She has supervised numerous PhD students, including Dr. Ae-Gyung Shim on South Korean Cinema, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UNSW from 2002 to 2006, as well as holding various leadership roles in academia.
