Dr. Annette Lehmann

Biography

Annette Jael Lehmann is a Professor of Contemporary Art and Visual Culture Theater at the Free University of Berlin. She holds a background in Comparative Literature, American Studies, Philosophy, and Art History, having studied in Berlin, Oxford, and Berkeley. Her academic experience includes positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA and Adjunct Faculty Member at the California Institute of the Arts. In 1999, she began working on her habilitation in Visual Culture, which she completed at the Free University in 2005. She has held various academic leadership roles, such as the Principal Investigator at the Einstein Center Digital Future since 2017 and Principal Researcher for the Excellence Cluster EXC 2020 at her university. Her areas of research encompass Visual Culture, Performance Studies, 20th Century Modern and Contemporary Art, and Digital Knowledge Design. She has published extensively on topics such as new media art and the aesthetics surrounding performance. Additionally, she is noted for her contributions to the field through various administrative roles and fellowships, including the Fellowship at the Literary Research Center Huntington Library, and has been recognized for her scholarly contributions with awards and honors throughout her career.
