Biography

Annick Paternoster holds a Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. She has lectured on Terminology and Translation at the University of Leuven and has been associated with the Istituto di Studi italiani since 2007. Her research focuses on the interdisciplinary aspects of pragmatics, particularly politeness and impoliteness in historical contexts. Paternoster examines the emergence of formulaic and conventionalized routines in Italian through diachronic corpora, integrating a wide range of literary texts and prescriptive sources, including etiquette manuals and children’s literature. In 2022, she published the Corpus dei Galatei Italiani dell'Ottocento, a specialized corpus that represents the production of conduct manuals in Italy from the 19th century. Paternoster has presented her work at various conferences and is actively engaged in public scholarship. She has numerous publications exploring themes of politeness and societal norms in linguistic interactions.
