Biography

Anouk de Koning is a professor at the University of Amsterdam in the Department of Anthropology, specifically within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Her research agenda critically examines the sociopolitical realities and futures produced through everyday welfare practices and the state's role in these dynamics. She leads significant research projects, including the Prototyping Welfare in Europe initiative, which investigates the intersection of state and society through experimentation in welfare practices, and the Crafting Resilient Societies project focusing on welfare innovations. Training in cultural anthropology and social history informs her studies of inequalities across urban contexts in Egypt, Suriname, and the Netherlands. Her PhD research highlighted how neoliberal reforms shaped urban segregation and gender-class intersections in Cairo. Anouk has also explored the social histories of inequality in Suriname and examined the experiences and citizenship of migrant communities in Western Europe through projects like 'Reproducing Europe', revealing the importance of social citizenship. Currently, she is finalizing a book on the Dutch welfare state, drawing from fieldwork conducted in Amsterdam with Parent Child Teams.
