Biography

Anouk Smeekes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University, specializing in Youth Studies. Her research focuses on social and political psychology, particularly exploring emotional responses to civic engagement among youth in the context of pressing societal challenges such as the climate crisis and the rise of populist radical-right parties, as well as Europe's contested colonial past. Additionally, she contributes to the MERM Research Master program, coordinating thesis supervision in the Ethnic Prejudice course, and oversees master's thesis coordinators in the YDSC Master. Smeekes is a member of the ISS Exam Committee for Bachelor programs within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Currently, she is a consortium member and work package co-leader for the project on changing colonial heritage in Europe (CONCILIARE), funded by Horizon Europe from 2024 to 2027. She also co-leads a research project addressing developmental dynamics of climate anxiety and hope among youth, supported by an incentive grant from the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.
