Biography

Anqi “Angie” Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Whiting School of Engineering and a member of the Data Science and AI Institute. She is broadly interested in developing principled machine learning algorithms that facilitate reliable and trustworthy human-compatible AI systems for real-world applications. Her research focuses on enabling machine learning algorithms to be robust to changing data environments, providing accurate uncertainty estimates, and considering human preferences and values in AI interactions. Liu has a particular interest in high-stakes applications involving safety and societal impacts of AI. She develops, analyzes, and applies statistical machine learning methods, deep learning techniques, and sequential decision-making strategies. Her established work in distributionally robust learning addresses covariate shift, and she explores various topics including active learning, safe exploration, off-policy learning, and fair machine learning. Liu has received several awards including the Amazon Research Award and the Johns Hopkins Discovery Award. Her publications have appeared in leading machine learning conferences, and she is actively involved in research that applies machine learning to healthcare, supported by the National Institute of Aging and Moore Foundation.
