Ansje van Beusekom studied art history at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and obtained her PhD there in 1998 with a historical research on the perceptions of film in the Netherlands from 1895 to 1940, particularly in relation to art. A commercial edition of her dissertation was published as 'Art and Entertainment: Reactions to Film as a New Medium in the Netherlands, 1895-1940' in 2001. As a researcher, she worked in 1997 and 1998 at the Netherlands Film Museum. Since 2001, she has been associated as an instructor researcher with the Media and Culture program. In addition to teaching, she conducts research on the history of film reception in the Netherlands, cinema culture, film and other media, and film as art, with numerous publications both domestically and internationally.
