Biography

Anthonie Meijers is a full professor of philosophy and ethics at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research interests include the theory of artifacts, epistemology of engineering, and ethics of technology, particularly in relation to behavior change technologies, speech act theory, and collective intentionality. Meijers is regarded as a key figure in the empirical turn in the philosophy of technology, focusing on how technical artifacts possess both material and social dimensions. He has contributed to various research programs dealing with persuasive technology, cognitive artifacts, and the quantified self movement. He authored the TU/e long-term educational vision titled 'Engineers of the Future' in 2013, highlighting the importance of understanding technical objects and their societal functions in engineering education. Meijers received his PhD in philosophy from Leiden University, and his dissertation laid the groundwork for Searle's speech acts theory. He has also conducted extensive research at the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to his academic duties, he is the scientific director of the 4TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology and has held significant editorial roles, including founding editor of 'Philosophical Explorations' and chief editor of a landmark handbook on Philosophy of Technology and Engineering Sciences.
