Dr. Anthony Bale

Biography

Professor Anthony Bale is a prominent scholar specializing in Medieval and Renaissance English literature. A Professorial Fellow at Girton College, University of Cambridge, he has significantly contributed to the understanding of medieval English culture and literature. His research interests encompass Christian-Jewish relations, popular religion, the history of antisemitism, and critical studies of poetry, particularly focusing on the works of John Lydgate and cults such as St Edmund of East Anglia. Bale has conducted extensive research on pilgrimage studies related to the Holy Land and has edited significant medieval texts, including the ‘Book of Marvels’ and ‘Travels’ by John Mandeville. He has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including fellowships from the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust. Bale has also curated exhibitions and served as an academic advisor for outreach projects aimed at highlighting medieval culture. He has led the New Chaucer Society and is currently establishing the Medieval Ideas Creative Lab at Cambridge, focusing on enhancing creative interactions with medieval sources. With several notable publications, including his recent book ‘A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages’, Bale continues to be a leading figure in the study of medieval literature and culture.
