Biography

Tony Bertelli is the Douglas S. Joyce L. Sherwin Professor at the College of the Liberal Arts, honoring Frank Whitmore. He is a Senior Research Associate at the Barcelona Institute for International Studies, a member of the National Academy of Public Administration, and his research examines the role of political institutions in shaping public policy outcomes and organizational structures in American comparative settings. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Public Policy. Bertelli graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with dual degrees in economics and business, later earning an M.A. in economics from Penn State, a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in public management and policy from the University of Chicago. He has served on the faculties of several universities in Europe, including New York University, Bocconi University in Italy, the University of Southern California, the University of Georgia, the University of Manchester, and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Bertelli is the author or co-author of more than 50 articles and books, including "Madison’s Managers: Public Administration and the Constitution" and "Political Economy of Public Sector Governance." His latest book, "Democracy Administered: Public Administration Reshapes Representative Government," was published in 2021 and is part of the Advanced Grant from the European Research Council aimed at implementation by 2026. His research has appeared in leading academic journals such as the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics.
