Biography
Anthony Day began his academic career at the Australian National University in the 1980s, working in the 'Organoironcarbonyl' chemistry laboratory under Professor Arthur Birch. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Rodney Rickards, focusing on the synthetic aspects of ansamycin antibiotics. Following his PhD, he undertook a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Guy Ourisson at the University of Strasbourg (then known as Université de Louis Pasteur), where he researched micelle synthesis and stability. After returning to Australia, he continued his work at UNSW Canberra in the laboratory of Professor Richard Russell. In 1989, he transitioned to private business but returned to research in the late 1990s at UNSW Canberra, where he developed a primary interest in supramolecular and macrocyclic chemistry. He is a principal developer of a family of macrocyclic host molecules known as cucurbit[n]uril, maintaining a significant international presence in this field. His research primarily focuses on applications involving cucurbit[n]uril derivatives, particularly their potential in drug delivery. He holds multiple international patents related to this work and is actively seeking high-achieving Ph.D. students for scholarships in this area.
