Dr. Anthony Fane

Biography

Professor Tony Fane is an Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College and has been a leading figure in membrane science and technology since 1973. His research focuses on the application of membranes in environmental contexts, particularly in the water cycle, including desalination, water reclamation, and the use of membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment. He has held prestigious positions, including Head of the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry at UNSW and Director of the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology. Professor Fane is recognized as a world expert in this field, contributing significantly to advancements in membrane technologies and their sustainability aspects. He has served on editorial boards and received several accolades, including the International Water Association’s Membrane Technology Award for his pioneering contributions. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2002 for his services to Chemical Engineering and the Environment.
