Dr. Anthony Good

Biography

Anthony Good is a Professor Emeritus at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh. He previously served as the Head of the School before retiring. His academic background includes a B.Sc in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Durham. Good's early career was in chemical physics, where he worked at various universities, including Alberta, Cambridge, and Peradeniya. He retrained as an anthropologist in the mid-1970s and has since conducted extensive field research primarily in South India and Sri Lanka, focusing on themes of kinship and religious practices. Good has also contributed to policy-related work on asylum and human rights, serving as an expert witness in asylum appeal cases. He has published widely on topics such as the ceremonial economy of South Indian temples and the legal aspects of asylum processes. His ongoing research interests include South Asia, anthropology of law, and migration, as well as the experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in various contexts.
