Biography

Anthony Grubbs is an Associate Professor and Department Chairperson of the Spanish Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. He is the Director of the MSU Translation Center, which provides translation and interpretation services for Michigan communities. Grubbs has authored 'Playwright’s Perspective: Innovative Dramaturgy Poetics Early Modern Spain' and has had his research on early modern theater culture published in numerous academic journals. His current project involves a monograph on the dramatic representations of visual culture related to Saint Christopher in early modern Iberia and includes a critical edition of 'Vida y muerte de San Cristóbal' by Juan de Benavides, published in 2020. He also worked on the edition of Juan de la Cueva’s 'El infamador', published in 2008. Grubbs is a member of the Translation Lab, a cross-disciplinary group focusing on translating and adapting early modern Spanish theater for contemporary stages. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Hispanic Classical Theater. In his leisure time, Grubbs enjoys cooking, skiing, and traveling with family and friends.
