Anthony Richard Hayward is Professor Emeritus in Pediatrics (Research) at Brown University. He has dedicated his career to the study of primary immunodeficiency disorders, starting in the 1970s at the Institute of Child Health in London and subsequently at the University of Colorado. His clinical work contributed to the recognition of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) in Navajo populations and the identification of bile duct cancers in XHIM patients. Hayward expanded his research to gene-hunting and basic immunity studies involving neonatal herpes simplex virus infections and CNS recurrences. His projects involved developing lymphocyte culture methods to estimate responder cell frequencies, which were later applied to shingles patients. His data played a significant role in the FDA's approval of experimental shingles vaccines tested in the 1990s. He served at the NIH as the Director of the National Center for Research Resources, overseeing the Clinical Translational Science Award program from 2001 to 2014. After returning to academia at Brown, he works on research related to TLR7 moesin variants associated with immunodeficiency and autoimmunity in collaboration with labs at Yale and the NIH.
