Anthony Laverty is an Associate Professor in the Public Health Policy Evaluation Unit at the Department of Primary Care & Public Health, Imperial College London. He joined Imperial after completing his PhD in 2014. His research interests span public health and the social determinants of health, with a focus on quantitative quasi-experimental evaluation methods. He has a particular interest in the intersection of transport systems and health. Laverty is the Principal Investigator on a project assessing the road safety impacts of Clean Air Zones in England and has worked on evaluations of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, examining their effects on road traffic injuries, crime, and emergency service response. He previously directed a study on the potential transport, health, and inequality impacts of road user charging in England. His current research explores the health implications of increasing vehicle sizes and the electrification of motorized transport. Laverty has a longstanding interest in tobacco control, having led a Cancer Research UK-funded project investigating youth smoking and e-cigarette use. His work has influenced policies on tobacco taxation and reducing global infant mortality, including contributing to a WHO/UNDP policy brief on tobacco control and child development. He supervises PhD research on the inequalities in NHS App use and the relationship between health outcomes and populist political party support, as well as the links between social care and public health spending. Laverty welcomes PhD enquiries related to these topics and serves as Co-Director of the Imperial Masters in Public Health programme, where he leads modules on commercial determinants of health and strategies for population health improvement.
