Biography

A tireless observer of cosmic phenomena and a prolific author, Anthony F.J. Moffat has been a distinguished professor at the Université de Montréal for over three decades. He began his studies in physics at the University of Toronto in the early 1960s, later acquiring a Master's degree in astronomy and earning two doctorates while pursuing post-doctoral studies in Germany. Joining the faculty at Université de Montréal in 1976, Professor Moffat specialized in massive stars, uncovering that stellar winds are stochastic and inhomogeneous rather than smooth and uniform. His pioneering work includes the establishment of a coherent classification for massive stars and Wolf-Rayet stars. Between 1990 and 1998, he directed the Mont Mégantic Observatory. Over his 40-year career, he published 290 articles in esteemed peer-reviewed journals, contributed to 163 conference proceedings, and co-edited six books. Professor Moffat has significantly influenced the training of graduate students, having supervised numerous doctoral and master's theses, and continues his research with funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and has received several prestigious awards, including the Killam Fellowship from 1998 to 2000.
