Biography

Anthony Stanco is a trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and educator based in Southeast Michigan, known for his contributions to Jazz Studies. A product of Detroit’s rich musical heritage, he spent his early years studying under local jazz legends Marcus Belgrave and Rodney Whitaker. He attended the Manhattan School of Music to continue his education with renowned brass instructor Laurie Frink and later transferred to Michigan State University to complete both his undergraduate and master’s degrees. Stanco won the International Trumpet Guild’s 2013 Jazz Improvisation Competition, showcasing his talent in the field. He leads Crucial Elements, a nationally recognized 5-piece ensemble that has performed extensively, including representation of the United States in over a dozen countries through the State Department’s “American Music Abroad” program. Their performances span leading international venues such as the Java Jazz Festival and Cairo Jazz Club, earning acclaim for their captivating live shows. Stanco also maintains an active recording career, with releases including 'You Know Feeling' on the Detroit Music Factory label. His work as a composer and arranger includes commissions for significant events and projects across the Midwest. Stanco’s passion for education is evident through his roles as a guest artist and educator at various institutions and jazz festivals, reflecting his commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He joined the MSU College of Music faculty in 2021, continuing his dedication to jazz education and innovation.
