Biography

Anthony Tan was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria in 2020 after serving in a similar role at the University of Colorado, Springs. He was born and raised in Calgary, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Composition and Piano Performance from the University of Calgary. Following this, he completed his Master’s and Ph.D. in Music Composition at McGill University, focusing on live electronics and the intersection of music perception and compositional practice. Tan further pursued advanced studies in Germany, obtaining a Meisterklasse diploma from Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber, Dresden. His work has gained recognition both nationally and internationally, earning several awards including a Juno nomination for Classical Composition of the Year in 2023, the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2021, and the Giga-Hertz Production Prize from ZKM | Karlsruhe in 2011. He was also a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University during the 2016-2017 academic year. In his teaching, Tan emphasizes the role of the teaching-artist paradigm and aims to inspire students to question traditional concepts of music while developing their unique sonic expressions.
