Biography

Antón García-Abril is a Professor at the School of Architecture and Planning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his European PhD in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSAM-UPM) and is a registered architect in Massachusetts. As a founding partner of Ensamble Studio, he leads a cross-functional team that emphasizes the balance of imagination and reality, innovation in typologies, technologies, and methodologies, with a focus on addressing issues in the diverse construction landscape and prefabrication. His early works include notable projects such as the SGAE Headquarters and Hemeroscopium House in Truffle, Spain. More recent works encompass Ensamble Fabrica in Madrid and Ca'n Terra in Menorca, Spain, which aim to advance experimentation in the field. His work is extensively published and has been exhibited globally, including prestigious venues like the Cooper Hewitt, NYC Design Triennial, Chicago Architecture Biennial, and the Venice Architecture Biennale. García-Abril has received numerous international awards, including the 2022 American Academy Arts and Letters Award in Architecture and the 2019 RIBA Charles Jencks Award. He remains active in academic research and has established the Débora POPlab, a Prototypes Prefabrication Research Laboratory at MIT.
