Biography

Antoni Forner-Cuenca leads the Electrochemical Materials Systems group in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research focuses on advancing transformative energy technologies for real-world applications. Leveraging principles of (electro)chemical engineering, materials science, and physical chemistry, his team designs, synthesizes, characterizes, and models innovative materials and reactors. Key applications include large-scale energy storage with flow batteries and energy conversion in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers, contributing to the decarbonization of the chemical industry through efficient molecular synthesis and separation processes. He is particularly fascinated by the conversion of chemical to electrical energy and aims to accelerate the urgent energy transition using electrochemical tools. Forner-Cuenca studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Alicante in Spain and conducted research at the University of Kentucky's Center for Applied Energy Research and SABIC Innovative Plastics. He completed his PhD at ETH Zurich, where he developed gas diffusion layers with patterned wettability for polymer electrolyte fuel cells. His work earned him the ETH Zurich Medal for outstanding PhD thesis and the Electrochemical Society's Energy Technology Graduate Student Award. After a postdoctoral position at MIT, he began his independent academic career at TU/e in 2019 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023.
