Biography

Antonio Iavarone is a Professor of Neurology and Pathology at Columbia University. His research focuses on unraveling the biological and genetic alterations that drive subgroups of malignant brain tumors, aiming to exploit this information for rational therapeutic stratification. His group has made significant contributions to cancer biology, including the identification of master regulators of cancer initiation and progression in distinct sub-groups of brain tumors. Iavarone discovered oncogenic gene fusions, such as FGFR3-TACC3, which trigger tumorigenesis through the activation of oxidative phosphorylation. These fusions are frequent chromosomal translocations present in various types of human cancer. Moreover, he has chaired the Pan-Glioma ATLAS-TCGA Working Group and Neurofibromatosis 1 synodos, collaborating with international researchers to formulate guidelines for the accurate diagnosis and prognosis of glioma patients. Through the combination of computational and experimental tools, Iavarone continues to make transformative mechanistic discoveries that provide personalized therapeutics for an increasing number of patients suffering from deadly tumor types.
