Biography

Dr. La Pastina’s research program operates registers relying on long-term ethnographic work. He investigates communities, typically away from urban centers, that engage in mediated forms of communication. The primary locus of his analysis is a rural community in Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Brazil, where he has conducted research since 1996. Over the past decade, he has expanded his ethnographic practice into online spaces while continuing his engagement with the community, investigating how new technologies are appropriated and incorporated into everyday life. Additionally, his work involves textual analysis of media products, particularly focusing on representations of non-mainstream populations. He has written extensively on indigenous representations and gender minorities in Brazil, examining the role of memory in the production and interpretation of images. His research intersects with themes of humanities, critical studies, and cultural representation.
