Biography

Antonio Ortega received his Telecommunications Engineering degree from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain in 1989 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York in 1994. He joined the University of Southern California's Electrical Engineering department in the same year and is currently a Professor. His roles have included Associate Chair and director of the Signal Image Processing Institute. Ortega is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the ACM and APSIPA. His committee contributions include chairing the Image Multidimensional Signal Processing technical committee and the SPS Big Data Special Interest Group. He has served as co-chair for several technical programs, including MMSP 1998 and ICIP 2008. Additionally, he has been involved in editorial positions with the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and the APSIPA Transactions on Signal and Information Processing. Ortega has supervised 40 PhD students and has over 300 publications in international conferences and journals. His research interests include signal compression, representation, and communication analysis, with a focus on distributed compression and wireless sensor networks.
