Biography

Antonio Carlos de Oliveira Ruellas is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan's School of Dentistry, where he has been a faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics since January 2018. He has a rich background in dental education, having taught undergraduate and graduate PhD students at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for 22 years. He completed his dental schooling in 1989, followed by residency training in Orthodontics in 1995, and earned his PhD in 2001. Dr. Ruellas is a board-certified orthodontist recognized by the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics. He functions directly as a didactic and clinical instructor for graduate students and currently holds the position of Graduate Orthodontic Clinic Director and Course Director for the biomechanics course. He is actively involved in clinical practice, seeing patients alongside faculty associates. His research includes over 100 scientific publications focused on Materials Science, Biomechanics, tooth movement, and 3D imaging. Presently, his research interests are primarily centered around 3D imaging and its applications in clinical settings, with a particular focus on treatment outcomes, relapse, and the skeletal and dental impacts of various therapies using 3D imaging for diagnostic purposes.
