Biography

Antonio Terrone is an Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University, where he specializes in East Asian cultures, politics, and religions. His academic career includes serving as an analyst on East Asia before joining Northwestern, and he previously held the position of Assistant Professor of Tibetan Buddhist Studies at the Graduate Institute of Religious Studies at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan. His research encompasses the politics and policies of religion in modern and contemporary China, focusing on borderlands, particularly in Tibet and East Turkestan, and touching on themes such as religious culture, literature, ethno-religious politics, and violence. Terrone has conducted extensive fieldwork in various Asian countries, including India, China, Taiwan, and Nepal. He is proficient in several Asian languages, including Mandarin Chinese and Tibetan. Antonio is actively working on a monograph examining the rise of mass Buddhist encampments in Eastern Tibetan areas of China and the role of the Tenth Panchen Lama in the revival of monastic education in Tibet during the 1980s. At Northwestern, he teaches a variety of courses related to East Asian cultures and religions.
