Biography

Antonis Kotsonas is an Associate Professor at the Institute for the Study of Ancient World at New York University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and has previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati and held lecturer positions at several esteemed institutions including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Amsterdam, the University of Crete, and King’s College London. His research focuses on material culture and socio-economic history of Greece in the Mediterranean, particularly during the Early Iron Age through the Classical periods. Dr. Kotsonas has conducted extensive fieldwork across various regions including Crete, the Cyclades, Euboea, Macedonia, and Latium, and co-directs an excavation at the ancient Greek and Roman city of Lyktos in Crete. His publications address important themes such as production and consumption of pottery and sculpture, trade and interaction, as well as identity and material culture in the context of Greek archaeology. He has authored and co-authored several significant works and has also served as an Area Editor for the Wiley Encyclopedia of Ancient History. In addition to his academic roles, he has also been a Curator at the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam and has been recognized with awards such as the Rising Star Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.
