Dr. Antony Galione

Biography

Antony Galione is a Statutory Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator. He has been a Professorial Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall since 2006. Galione studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he attained a BA in Natural Sciences in 1985 and a PhD in Zoology in 1989. His early research focused on calcium oscillations and their role in cell activation, conducted in Sir Michael Berridge's laboratory. He spent time at University College London working on mammalian fertilization before becoming a Harkness Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, studying calcium signals in early development. He joined the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford in 1991 and has held various fellowships, including Beit Memorial Fellow and Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow. Elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2010 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016, Galione is recognized for his significant contributions to pharmacology, particularly in calcium signaling, which earned him the Novartis Prize from the British Pharmacological Society in 2001.
