Biography

Anujeema Saikia is a Principal Project Scientist in the Speech Lab at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. With a focus on language documentation, she specializes in lesser-known languages of Assam, particularly those belonging to the Tibeto-Burman family. She earned her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, where her research centered on languages spoken in Assam's Barak Valley, including Saihriem and Jhilo-Milo, analyzing how socio-demographic environments influence and resist language change. Currently, she leads a documentation project for Saihriem under the Major Documentation Grant of the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP) at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. This collaborative initiative, alongside IIT Delhi, the University of Bern, and Assam University, focuses on creating an extensive audio-visual corpus of Saihriem, an endangered South-Central Trans-Himalayan language spoken by 600–700 individuals in the Cachar district of Assam. The goal of this documentation effort is to cover diverse genres of everyday cultural practices, develop a multilingual lexical database, and compile sociolinguistic profiles of the community. By prioritizing collaborative methods and community participation, Anujeema's work aims to strengthen linguistic knowledge and enhance local cultural resilience.
