Biography

Anup K. Biswas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Columbia University Medical Center. His research laboratory is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms that drive metastasis and the resistance to targeted therapies in lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. A significant number of lung cancer deaths occur due to metastasis, where cancer cells spread from the primary tumor to vital organs such as the brain, bone, and liver. Metastatic lung cancer remains incurable due to the lack of effective anti-metastatic therapies, and brain metastases specifically occur in approximately 50% of lung cancer patients, significantly impairing cognitive function, mobility, and daily life activities. His research aims to identify key mediators of metastasis and develop novel therapeutic strategies to eliminate metastatic growth in lung cancer. Recent studies from his lab have identified a novel S100A9-ALDH1A1-Retinoic Acid signaling axis that drives lethal brain relapses in lung cancer cells. This research has opened avenues for preventing metastatic progression and overcoming resistance to EGFR-targeted therapies.
