Anup Grewal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and in the Tri-Campus Graduate Department of History. He teaches courses in History, Women’s Studies, and Global Asia Studies, specializing in modern Chinese history, cultural studies, and gender studies. His research focuses on the broader regional and global contexts of Chinese cultural history. Currently, he is working on a book project that explores the activism and literary contributions of Chinese women involved in leftist political and cultural movements during the 1920s and 1930s. Anup's ongoing research includes comparative studies of socialism and literature between India and China, along with explorations of contemporary minority films and independent documentaries from China. He joined the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2015 after serving as a Lecturer in Chinese Comparative Literature at King’s College London from 2013 to 2015 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Asian Modernities and Traditions at Leiden University from 2012 to 2013. Anup completed his PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago in March 2012, and he holds a B.A. from McGill University and an M.A. from Trent University.
