Anyi Mazo-Vargas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Duke University. Originally from Cali, Colombia, Anyi graduated from the Biology program at Universidad del Valle. She pursued her master's degree at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, focusing on weevil beetles phylogenetics. After moving to the United States, she worked as a laboratory manager in Dr. Buchler’s lab at Duke University, utilizing luciferases to study the cell cycle in Saccharomyces yeast. These experiences inspired her to pursue a PhD in Entomology. Her current research interests involve the evolutionary and adaptive roles of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in regulation of gene expression in insects, particularly in relation to seasonal color patterns in butterflies and moths. Her work aims to uncover the genetic underpinnings of adaptation in these organisms, with a focus on evolutionary biology and molecular genetics. She has published several articles in esteemed journals like the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, highlighting her contributions to the field of entomology and evolutionary adaptation.
