Biography

Aparna Nair is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Scarborough, specializing in the fields of Health Society and Global Disability Studies. She previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma-Norman in the History Science department from 2015 until 2022. Professor Nair is currently working on an upcoming book, "Fungible Bodies," which will be published by the University of Illinois Press in 2024. This book examines the relationship between disability and colonialism in British India. Her research interests focus on the histories of technologies designed for disabled people, including vision aids, hearing aids, and prosthetics, as well as the histories of vaccination and quarantine in India. She studies the material history of vaccination, particularly the history of vaccination certificates, and works on changing representations of disability and difference in popular culture. Additionally, Professor Nair builds exhibits as part of her public history and humanities work.
