Biography

April Z. Gu joined the Cornell faculty in 2018, having previously been a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University from 2006 to 2017. She received her B.S. in Environmental Engineering Science from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and her Ph.D. in Civil Environmental Engineering, jointly with Microbiology, from the University of Washington. Gu has worked as a process engineer and research scientist at HDR Engineering, specializing in water and wastewater treatment processes design. Her major research interest revolves around understanding and applying biological agents, such as microorganisms, to detect, transform, and mitigate environmental pollutants in natural and engineered systems. Gu stays active in academic societies and professional organizations related to water and environmental engineering, serving on committees for the International Water Association (IWA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
