Professor Yavari joined the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in January 2005. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran in 1997, and continued his studies at George Washington University, where he obtained an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2000. He then completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Applied Mechanics option, minor Mathematics) at the California Institute of Technology in 2005. Professor Yavari is a Fellow of the Society for Engineering Science and a member of the American Academy of Mechanics. His research interests include developing systematic theories in discrete mechanics and the behavior of crystalline solids, particularly the effects of defects on material properties. He has made contributions through the development of atomistic methods such as density functional theory and embedded atom potentials to study defects in materials. His work also addresses the challenges of extending existing techniques from solid-state physics to non-periodic systems and connecting numerical methods with the structure of governing equations.
