Biography

Arbel Griner is an Associate Research Scholar at Princeton University's Global Health Program. He received his PhD in Social Medicine from IMS/UERJ, a prestigious institute for policy, epidemiologic, and social studies related to biomedicine in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Arbel's work employs a multi-disciplinary approach, incorporating social medicine, social studies of science and technology, and anthropology to provide a nuanced perspective on concepts of pathology and normality in health as conceptualized by contemporary science, especially in the neurosciences. His research and teaching address broad themes including the entanglements of science production, diagnostic and therapeutic processes in contemporary psychology, gender equity in health, and the dynamics of health crises. His recent work has scrutinized claims made by neuroscientists regarding biological affectivity and examined the appropriated biomedical practices and their bioethical regulation. Arbel collaborates with a group of women scientists and bioethicists in Brazil to study the public policy approaches to the Zika and Covid-19 epidemics, particularly how these affect the lives of women. His work on maternal mortality in Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic has produced significant findings and underscores the importance of adopting an intersectional lens for gender-centered responses to public health epidemics.
