Biography

Archana Kamal is an Associate Professor at Northwestern University, directing the Quantum Engineering Science Technology (QUEST) Group. Her research focuses on fundamental and applied aspects of quantum information processing. She completed her B.Sc. (Honors) in Physics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, followed by a Master's in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Kamal earned her M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics in 2010 and 2013, respectively. She later completed a postdoctoral stint at MIT. Her research has led to new designs of noise-resilient artificial atoms (qubits) and innovative protocols for high-efficiency information routing and nonreciprocal amplification, which are widely used in laboratories around the globe. Current themes in her group include scalable entanglement stabilization, autonomous error correction, quantum-limited amplification readout, and the application of quantum information concepts to address questions in early Universe cosmology and condensed matter thermodynamics. Her contributions to nonreciprocal quantum signal processing have been recognized with awards such as the MIT Technology Review TR35: Global Innovator Award in 2018, the AFOSR Young Investigator Award in 2021, and the NSF CAREER Award.
