Areg Danagoulian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his PhD in experimental nuclear physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where his dissertation focused on experiments utilizing real Compton scattering of protons at energies between 2-6 GeV, thereby contributing to the understanding of the internal structure of protons in the context of external excitations. After completing his doctoral studies, Areg worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory and later as a senior scientist at Passport Systems, Inc. During his time at PSI, he developed the Prompt Neutron Photofission technique, which facilitates the rapid detection of shielded fissionable materials in commercial cargo traffic. His current research interests center around the applications of nuclear physics in the field of nuclear security, including nuclear nonproliferation, treaty verification technologies, nuclear safeguards, and cargo security.
