Biography

Ares J. Rosakis is the Theodore von Karman Professor at Caltech's Department of Aerospace. He has an extensive academic background with degrees from the University of Oxford (B.Sc., 1978) and Brown University (Sc.M., 1980; Ph.D., 1982). His career at Caltech started as an Assistant Professor (1982-88), followed by an Associate Professorship (1988-93) and full Professor status (1993-2004). In 2004, he became the von Karman Professor and held the Booth Leadership Chair between 2013 and 2015. He served as the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories from 2004 to 2009 and the Division Chair from 2009 to 2015. His research areas include solid mechanics, dynamic mechanical properties, ballistic impacts, hypervelocity impacts, micrometeorites, dynamic fracture, and more, making significant contributions to the understanding of earthquake fault mechanics and restoration of ancient stone monuments.
