Biography

Ares J. Rosakis is the Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Oxford in 1978, followed by a Master of Science at Brown University in 1980, and a Ph.D. in 1982. He began his academic career at Caltech as an Assistant Professor in 1982, progressing to Associate Professor in 1988, and then to full Professor in 1993. In 2004, he was appointed as the von Karman Professor. Rosakis has served in various capacities including the Booth Leadership Chair from 2013 to 2015, Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories from 2004 to 2009, and Division Chair from 2009 to 2015. His research focuses on solid mechanics, specifically in areas such as dynamic mechanical properties, ballistic impact, hypervelocity impact of micrometeorites on spacecraft, dynamic fracture and fragmentation, and the mechanics of materials. His efforts also extend to restoration practices of ancient stone monuments and understanding earthquake fault mechanics and induced seismicity.
