Biography

Ares J. Rosakis is the Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oxford in 1978, a Sc.M. from Brown University in 1980, and his Ph.D. in 1982. He joined Caltech as an Assistant Professor and has held various positions, including Associate Professor, Professor, and von Karman Professor, as well as the Booth Leadership Chair and the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories. His research focuses on solid mechanics, analyzing dynamic mechanical properties under various conditions including ballistic and hypervelocity impacts, and the behavior of materials under dynamic conditions. He is also interested in the mechanics of geological materials and restoration techniques for ancient stone monuments, as well as earthquake fault mechanics and induced seismicity. He has contributed to developing courses related to mechanics, solid materials, and dynamic failure, demonstrating his commitment to education and research in his field.
