Biography

Ari Jerrems is an academic specializing in International Relations and Political Geography. His research interests lie in understanding the forces that bring people together and push them apart, particularly through the study of boundaries, borders, and global politics. He explores how these concepts are constructed and negotiated within urban spaces, and seeks to rethink fundamental ideas in International Relations and Political Geography, such as security, sovereignty, territory, and political subjectivity. Jerrems has a particular focus on colonial and postcolonial histories as well as the everyday infrastructural dimensions of borders. Before joining the University of Western Australia, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian National University, where he worked on the 'Cartography of Peace' project. His recent work has examined the politics of neighboring, political infrastructure, and has advanced his research agenda within the field of International Urban Politics. He has published a book titled 'Spatial Limits of Political Community: Bordering Neighbour Urban Spain' through Bristol University Press, which is set to release in 2025. He is also active in supervising PhD students in areas such as Critical Border Studies, International Political Sociology, and Urban Geopolitics.
