Biography

Arianna Calcinotto is a Group Leader of the Cancer Immunotherapy group at the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana. She received her PhD in Molecular Medicine with honors from Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan in 2015, followed by PostDoc training at the San Raffaele Institute in Milan, working in the lab of Professor Bergsagel at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, USA. She has published several original papers in major scientific journals such as Nature and Nature Communications, focusing on the interactions between cancer cells and immune cells within the tumor microenvironment and their role in cancer progression and therapy resistance. In July 2019, she established her independent research group at the IOR, concentrating on cancer immunotherapy and proposing novel concepts to block the pro-tumoral activity of infiltrating immune cells while re-activating beneficial anti-tumor immune responses. Current research aims include understanding the mechanisms by which innate immune cells contribute to tumor progression and therapy resistance, particularly in hormone-dependent breast cancers, with the ultimate goal of translating these discoveries into novel therapeutic options for patients.
