Dr. Arie Freiberg

Biography

Arie Freiberg is an Emeritus Professor at Monash University, with extensive expertise in criminology and legal education. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Monash University from 2004 to 2012 and was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2003. Freiberg appointed as the Foundation Chair of Criminology at the University of Melbourne in January 1991, where he also held the position of Head of the Department of Criminology until June 2002. In 2013, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. He holds an honours degree in Law and a Diploma in Criminology from the University of Melbourne and a Master of Laws from Monash University. In 2001, Freiberg received a Doctor of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of Law. He has authored approximately 190 publications focusing on areas such as sentencing, non-adversarial justice, and regulatory theory. Freiberg has held various leadership roles including as the inaugural Chair of the Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council and Chair of the Tasmanian Sentencing Advisory Council. His recent work includes consultations for government agencies on drug courts and regulatory reforms, and he has participated as a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School and Tel Aviv University.
