Biography

Ariel Salzmann is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University, specializing in Islamic World History and historical sociology. He completed his Ph.D. in History at Columbia University in 1995 and has a broad intellectual interest that spans various world regions and disciplines. His research includes a notable article that traces the roots of neoliberalism in the Ottoman Empire, which won the Turkish Studies Association’s Ömer Lutfi Barkan Article Prize and remains influential in the field. His current projects explore state formation theories, the histories of Mediterranean communities, and the transformation of market systems in the context of global capitalism. He is actively engaged in teaching seminars and lectures on a variety of subjects, including consumerism and the historiography of the Ottoman Empire, as well as modern capitalism. His work has been supported by numerous international and national grants, including those from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Research Institute in Turkey. He continues to contribute to the academic discourse through his research and teachings.
