Dr. Arif Masud

Biography

Arif Masud is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, holding joint appointments in the Grainger College of Engineering and the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine. His research primarily addresses contemporary scientific problems, focusing on areas such as mechanics computations that involve multiple interacting physical phenomena. His work emphasizes numerical methods grounded in mathematically rigorous frameworks, developing enhanced methods that are scalable and applicable across multifaceted physics phenomena. In particular, Masud's group aims to advance modeling and simulation techniques necessary for investigating core issues tied to sustainability in infrastructure, energy, and health. A significant element of his research includes integrating data-driven approaches with traditional physical methodologies, particularly through Stabilized Variational Multiscale Methods. He has made significant contributions to fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, computational medicine, and additive manufacturing, contributing to a broad range of applications. Masud has received various awards for his work, including the J.N. Reddy Medal and the Ted Belytschko Applied Mechanics Award, and he is actively involved in professional societies, having served as President of both the Society of Engineering Science and the Engineering Mechanics Institute.
